GrepS became an invaluable tool for OpenValue
About OpenValue
OpenValue is a consultancy and training provider that delivers high quality custom software. OpenValue has offices in 8 cities, and consists of over 160 highly skilled full stack Java experts around Europe.
OpenValue integrated GrepS around 4 years ago into their operations to enhance both their recruitment and skills development processes.
We had a chat with OpenValue’s CTO, Bert Jan Schrijver! Learn more about OpenValue’s adoption of GrepS as a key component in their recruitment strategy, and how it has become an integral asset in identifying and selecting qualified candidates.
The Challenge
Prior to using GrepS, OpenValue’s team was already using a test platform, but it fell short in providing the quality insights needed to identify competent candidates and their true skill level.
The Solution
GrepS emerged as the solution, offering a research-based scientific measurement tool that could predict productivity and work quality. Unlike their previous tool, GrepS stood out by providing a score based on reliable and proven statistical model according to six dimensions such as implementation, refactoring, object orientation, coding speed and unit testing.
“With GrepS, it has become easy to find the right candidates. We use GrepS as a filter which has the additional benefits of greatly reducing time that our senior top developers spend on technical interviews.”
The use of GrepS also became a motivating factor for candidates, reducing dropouts and increasing overall engagement in the hiring process. The feedback they have received is that GrepS feels natural and intuitive - giving a true assessment of their skill level. They describe it as being comparable to their regular work, which is a testament to the tool's quality and real-world approach.
Before vs. After GrepS
The hiring process before lacked objectivity and suffered from varying criteria used by different individuals. The cost of a mis-hire was huge, and a wrong hire could easily jeopardize the trust built over many years. Bert Jan underlines that the team now employs a consistent and objective filtering mechanism, reducing the number of mismatches and enhancing trust with clients.
GrepS is a "one-of-a-kind tool"
Bert Jan’s loyalty to GrepS spans over four years, with a proven high correlation between GrepS scores and candidate performance. Clients now recognize GrepS as a reliable indicator of developer skills, making it easier to sell consultants to clients and resulting in higher sales for Bert Jan’s team.

“From hiring the right candidate to tracking skill development, GrepS has contributed to our reputation. Standardized scores have become a hallmark of our value proposition, attracting high-value clients and interesting projects for our consultants”, according to Bert Jan.
Utilizing GrepS Strategically
GrepS isn’t just a hiring tool for OpenValue. Beyond the hiring process, it assists in training programs for the consultants.
“GrepS enables ut to measure skill levels before and after training to track progress in their development of java. Which to my knowledge is a unique capability that no other assessment platforms offers.”
Seamless process & positive experience
Using GrepS is also easy and straightforward even for the non-technical coordinators of the recruitment process. Candidates recieve an email, set up an account, complete the tests, and then recieve a comprehensive report on their skill results. The candidates are in control of their data and choose to share the result or drop out of the process.
The platform’s user-friendliness, coupled with excellent support from GrepS, made the transition to use the test platform seamless.
“Overall, working with IntelliJ, realistic tasks, and having control over their data and results create a sense of security for the candidates. GrepS has become a tool that not only aids in assessment but fosters a positive candidate experience,” according to Bert Jan.
